The Man Who Wouldn’t Listen

Once upon a time, there was a man who wouldn’t listen.

He would hear the words that were being said, but he wouldn’t listen to them.

It was more important for him to be ready to respond to what was being said than to give the speaker the attention that their words deserved.

Year after year, the man went on living his life, not listening, only speaking when he wanted to say something.

People eventually stopped speaking to him. No one wanted to be in his presence.

All of the lovely people that had once been in his life had disappeared.

He lived alone now, and he wondered why he was so alone.

Even the animals that once came to visit him left and did not return.

He never listened to what they were saying either.

He only fed them, observed them, but when they spoke to him, he heard not one word.

This man was not deaf, not dumb, but he lacked the ability to listen to what was being said.

Some say that perhaps it was out ego, learned cognitive dissonance from childhood, or just a simple lack of interest in other people.

The real truth was, however, he only listened to things that were of interest to him.

Hence, this man was a selfish man.

As selfish as they come.

And he was now a lonely man.

A lonely old man.

As lonely and as old as they come.

The children on his lonely block would run by and whisper about how lonely and how old he was.

He never listened to their whispers, yet he knew exactly what they were saying about him.

He thought about a time, long ago, when there was a lovely younger lady who had given him her heart.

And in return, he stepped on hers every day.

Although he took good care of her financially providing for her most basic needs, he never listened to a word she said unless it was interesting to him.

One day, he woke up and she was gone.

He tried to find her, but she had vanished.

No one knew where she had went.

If only he had listened, he may have known where.

But of course, he knew not, for he didn’t listen to the two thousand and fifty seven times she had told him that she was going to disappear one day and leave him because he didn’t listen to her.

So there he was, the old man with no one to listen to him.

And no one to listen to, since no one wanted to be around someone who never listened.

And when he died, no one was there to listen to his last breath.

Not even the animals he once fed.

The girl had no idea that he was gone.

She lived with animals that listened to her happily every after.

The end.

Dedicated to the man who wouldn’t listen. RIP.
